Lightmoor: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep the ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. In Lightmoor, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do right now, Lightmoor: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the electrics on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about how much volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting TF4 3, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance along Leasowe Green.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

On a forecourt around Lightmoor, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car away from the petrol pump. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Doseley last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the base of your tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out. Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Lightmoor with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only in the tank, it doesn't. And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Lightmoor

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside the tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Lightmoor or out in Coalbrookdale, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Shropshire your vehicle has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Lightmoor

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two may appear the same. No one intends it. It mostly happens outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. Rushing, outside Aqueduct Primary Academy, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Lightmoor Road. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Unicorn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar cars get it most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the spare car of a family with both fuel types. Wherever you are in Lightmoor or the rest of Shropshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lightmoor?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Lightmoor Nature Reserve or halfway across Lightmoor. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Every start pulls more of it through.

Lightmoor sits under 3 miles from the M54; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system, so driving for Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Lightmoor to the car park by War Memorial. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it is noticed soon.

Lightmoor: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street beside Museum of Steel Sculpture, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your car has stopped in Lightmoor, our technicians come to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and if the engine has run, since those replies decide the work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't wash away on its own. Clean diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step. Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Telford Central or on a driveway around Lightmoor. The test before our engineers leave is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lightmoor: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so not one fixed quote is fair. What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Park Lane Centre.

For that reason, every call from Lightmoor opens with the same trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, if it ran — before any quote. With those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Our price is given during the call, before a van leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
