Lily Hill: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the engine off then leave your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in Lily Hill. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Your next steps right now, Lily Hill: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting M45 7, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Don't do these:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition your car.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Springwater Lane.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Moving the car off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Lily Hill forecourt you're on, the Morrisons or any other. On your own drive, don't move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It doesn't blend. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Chapel Field last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking any part it touches until it's cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle parked around Lily Hill. Just inside your tank, it stays the same. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Lily Hill

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the whole fault. It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so watering it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in Barlow Fold or the heart of Lily Hill equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Greater Manchester your vehicle sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lily Hill: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; many designs allow it. It usually takes place at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Bernadette's Roman Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy. Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off North View, as the day ends. Else, in dim light outside The Cross Keys, your car is refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever in Greater Manchester, Lily Hill as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

Lily Hill: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Elms Playing Field or halfway across Lily Hill. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M60, under 3 miles from Lily Hill, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Mileage matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, so driving towards Salford, under 10 miles away, gives a much bigger job than crossing Lily Hill to the car park by Saint Bernadette's. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. When it's caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Lily Hill: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A street beside Whitefield Methodist Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the car has stopped in Lily Hill, our engineers come to it. The work depends on three replies, which our technicians get before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, on the spot. A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains will not wash away by itself. A test of the car follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped. Not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, your system is primed with new diesel. Whether it's a parking space at Clifton or a driveway around Lily Hill, that is where our technicians start the engine and you set off. Before we leave, we confirm it is running smoothly with clean diesel in. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lily Hill: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be fair. Three things shift the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Whitefield Garrick Theatre.

What was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Lily Hill enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of any figure, not afterwards. With those replies, the range narrows to one fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
