AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Lincoln? Keep It Switched Off
Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once your pump begins pulling it. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Lincoln. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.
Lincoln, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away
Do:
- Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
- Tell us a postcode starting LN1 3, or whatever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.
Never:
- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
- Turning your key to ignition alone sets the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
- Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch along Bailgate.
- By the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.
On a forecourt in Lincoln, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.
It doesn't blend. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. A vehicle topped up on a drive in St Catherines overnight and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.
After it's drawn in, the harm takes two forms. It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches until it's cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight around Lincoln makes it worse. Inside that tank alone, time does nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol
Petrol pumped into a diesel on Lincolnshire Co-op's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main fault. Mixed into your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using the motor does the damage.
AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the next fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Lincoln or out in Canwick, costs more than almost any other slip.
The same good news holds as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Lincolnshire the car has stopped.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Lincoln
Many motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two can appear identical. No one intends it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.
A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Westgate Academy the top-up is hurried. A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off Gordon Road, as the day ends. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside Organ Grinder, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.
Rented vehicles, brand-new vehicles, company vehicles, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars get it the most. An identical mistake, same first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Lincoln or the remainder of Lincolnshire.
Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lincoln?
Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — given any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.
You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from The Dean's Green or halfway across Lincoln. When you safely can, stop then switch everything off — with no restarting to see. Every start pulls more of that through.
If you were on the M180, under 25 miles from Lincoln, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.
Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Lincoln to park beside Saint Mary Magdalene and a drive of under 50 miles for Doncaster are such separate jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.
There is more to rinse out once the motor has run, and we do all of it where your car has stopped. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is noticed quickly.
Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Lincoln: what it takes
Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Lincoln: a side street close to Exchequergate, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What was put in, about how much, and whether your motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, since those decide the work.
Then that tank is drained where the vehicle waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed right through because what remains won't flush away unaided. After that, your filter: flushed, or changed if it must be. Then clean diesel, then a test of the car. Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.
Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step. Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Lincoln Central or on a drive around Lincoln. It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we go. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

Lincoln and Lincolnshire: AdBlue drains across the area
AdBlue call-outs around Lincoln are passed to vans that serve the places around it — St Giles, New Boultham plus Ermine — and most of Lincolnshire beyond, throughout LN postcodes. If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.
No moving is needed. In Lincoln, a cathedral city, a mobile service works: your car is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.
What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Lincoln?
Every job differs, so not one single price is honest. What moves the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind The Well at St Paul-in-the-Bail.
Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus whether the engine ran: each Lincoln call begins with exactly that, before any figure, never afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight price.
You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
Lincoln: still beside your car?
Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle. Keys out, engine off, ignition off. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, in Lincoln or wherever in Lincolnshire, after you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if it ran.
