Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Linthorpe

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits in Linthorpe. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Linthorpe

Do these:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so do not bin it away.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting TS5 5, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Do not:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch up Cambridge Square.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

Moving the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Linthorpe forecourt you're on, the EG On the Move included. On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Grove Hill last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. Overnight, a vehicle parked around Linthorpe with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the whole problem. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Linthorpe or out in Beechwood, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there is good news. Anywhere around North Yorkshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Linthorpe: how it ends up there

Many vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may look identical. Nobody intends it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Linthorpe Community Primary School. A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Cambridge Road, as the day ends. One more version: darkness, the car park outside Linthorpe Hotel, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere in North Yorkshire, Linthorpe as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

Linthorpe: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via the fuel filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from Middlesbrough Rugby Club Training Ground, or part way across Linthorpe, your motor may run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall. Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to see. Each start pulls more of that through.

Linthorpe lies under 15 miles from the A1(M); if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Linthorpe to the car park by Masonic Hall is a very different job from a run towards Durham, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. When it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Linthorpe: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Linthorpe: a side street close to Hope & Heroes, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What got in, roughly the quantity, plus whether your engine has been run: our technicians ask first, since those shape the work.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Testing the vehicle comes at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if your engine has not run. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the system is primed with new diesel. You drive off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Linthorpe or in a bay outside James Cook University Hospital. Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we go. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

Linthorpe: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, so not one fixed price is fair. What moves the price is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Toft House.

Ahead of any quote, never afterwards, each call from Linthorpe opens with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran. When they are answered, a range becomes a single firm number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
