How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lisle Court

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Lisle Court. Here in advance? Then what follows explains how it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single fluid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Lisle Court and Garrison Side carry, with diesel for your engine. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead. The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the mistake lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Lisle Court?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Dagger Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Mission heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Trinity Court or the middle of Lisle Court: it is the same few seconds either way.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Lisle Court or a drive out in Drypool. A few seconds, no more.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Hull's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in East Riding of Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Princes Dock Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.
  • The two under a single flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through the built-in spout.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lisle Court already?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor. Keep your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump. Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Tesco, Shell or any forecourt will normally help to push the car away when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Lisle Court.

Where the engine has been run by now, stop safely then turn the car off. Lisle Court lies under 15 miles from the M180; there, use the next exit. A short hop across Lisle Court is a smaller job than a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under a mile away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Lisle Court: what takes place when our engineers get there

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Victoria Dock Primary School, near Catfish or on your own drive, the van comes to it. What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the answers set both work and quote. You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears out on its own, however long it is left. Filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle. The motor is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house. The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
