Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Little Chell

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Little Chell, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Little Chell: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting ST6 6, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Turning your key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Carlton Avenue.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Little Chell forecourt you're on, the Murco Petroleum included. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go that way.

It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Great Chell last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through once your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car sitting around Little Chell. Just inside your tank, it stays the same. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the another forecourt nearby, and the issue is thinned fuel. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside your tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the following fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Little Chell or out in Chell Heath, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Staffordshire the car is standing.

Little Chell: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside Mill Hill Primary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Scott Road. Else, in dim light outside Chatterley Whitfeld, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Hired vehicles, new vehicles, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Keep it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Little Chell or the rest of Staffordshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Little Chell, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. It's been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

You may see your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Monks-Neil Park or halfway across Little Chell. No starting it again to check: stop when it is safe, then switch everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M6, under 10 miles from Little Chell, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 5 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Little Chell to the car park by St Michael's. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the car has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. When it is noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.

Little Chell: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside The Church of the Saviour, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Little Chell, our engineers come to it. The work depends on three replies, which we ask for before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your engine has run.

Then that tank is emptied where the vehicle stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because what remains will not flush away unaided. After that, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a test of the vehicle. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The final step is to prime your system on new diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, outside Longport or on a driveway around Little Chell. It's checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we head off. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Little Chell: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so not one fixed price is fair. What moves the price is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Tunstall Methodist Church.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Little Chell opens with the same trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, if it ran — before any figure. Given those replies, a range narrows to one fixed number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
