AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Little London? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm starts till the engine pulls it through. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Little London. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Little London, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting NR28 0, or just the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the engine stays off.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short distance up Little London Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Little London filling station — the Sainsbury's included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. On the drive, the car remains just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. A vehicle filled on a drive in Edingthorpe Green overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

After it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight in Little London makes things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting costs nothing. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the another forecourt nearby, and this issue is diluted fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, so watering it can't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Lyngate or the heart of Little London equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Norfolk the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Little London

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — may look the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it. A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. The refill is rushed outside North Walsham Junior School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped in. Someone pours the container in outside their house, right off Wharton Drive, as the day ends. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the car after dark, stopped in the car park outside The Bluebell Freehouse.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know the least. Keep it off: that is the first response to an identical mistake, wherever around Little London or the remainder of Norfolk you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Little London?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, maybe part way across Little London or returning from Acorn Road Play Park and Recreational Area. No starting it again to check: stop when safe, then switch everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M11, over 50 miles from Little London, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Little London to the car park by Quaker Meeting House is a very different job from a run towards Norwich, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has stopped, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Lasting damage is very unusual if it is noticed early.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Little London

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Little London: a side street close to Swafield Village Sign, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers decide the work, so first our technicians ask which fluid got in, roughly the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not wash away by itself. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the motor has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed your system on clean diesel. Whether it's a parking space outside North Walsham or a driveway around Little London, that is where we fire it up and you set off. We confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel before we leave. Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

Little London: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat price would be fair, since every job differs. Three things move the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Swafield Village Hall.

That's why each call from Little London starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. As the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
