Littleover: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Littleover. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Littleover and Sunny Hill carry, with diesel for your motor. The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for every tank. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.

Littleover: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Elgin Avenue before work, or in the car park outside The White Swan heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Littleover or out in Hillcross.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Littleover forecourt or a drive over in New Zealand, spend a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Peartree? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere across Derbyshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Cloudwood Close.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Stop when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through the built-in spout.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Step five stays off limits.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Littleover?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at TotalEnergies, BP or any forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear if asked. At home around Littleover? So your car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run. Littleover sits under 10 miles from the M1; on it, take the first exit. A short hop across Littleover is a smaller job than a run towards Derby, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

When we arrive in Littleover, what takes place?

The van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Littleover Baptist Church, or by Carlyle Infant and Nursery Academy. Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those answers settle the work and the price. Nobody sets off before you have heard the price by phone.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. That is why it counts more. After the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the car is tested. Next our technicians start the car and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
