Livingstone Park: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till the motor sucks it round. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Livingstone Park. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Livingstone Park, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting KT19 8, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Moving the car even a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.
  • Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Chantilly Way.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

The staff on duty at any Livingstone Park filling station — the Texaco included — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. At home, the car stays just as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in The Wells last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked around Livingstone Park. Just inside that tank, it stays the same. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Livingstone Park

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

An issue of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Sainsbury's. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It can't just be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next tankful will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Livingstone Park or out in Chessington, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside that tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere the car has come to rest across Surrey.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Livingstone Park?

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. The refill is hurried outside Southfield Park Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in. Close to Pelman Way, a driver pours a bottle in on that drive in the evening. Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside The Blenheim, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired cars, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most. Leave it switched off: that's the first response to the same mistake, wherever in Livingstone Park or the remainder of Surrey you happen to be.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Livingstone Park, and the engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via your filter, through the lines, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Long Grove Park, say, or part way across Livingstone Park. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M25, under 5 miles from Livingstone Park, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards Westminster, under 15 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Livingstone Park to the car park by The Horton. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Livingstone Park: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Livingstone Park: a side street near Horton Hospital, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what went in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run, since those replies settle the work.

Then that tank is cleared where the car waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than for petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, provided your engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on clean diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Livingstone Park or in a bay at Epsom. Our engineers check it runs properly on new diesel before we go. No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Livingstone Park: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, and so not one fixed price is honest. Three things change the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Hobbledown.

That's why each call from Livingstone Park starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it's run. Their answers shrink the range down to a single figure.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
