AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Llanrhos: What Now?

All of it turns on one fact: if your engine has been run since the AdBlue went in — more than anything else. Not run yet? Then keep it like that, wherever your car is — Llanrhos or Llandudno Junction. Call 0333 366 0103 with the key and motor both off. In Llanrhos, that is generally drained and cleaned where it stands. When your motor has run, pull in safely straight away, then turn the car off. A bigger job, yes, but the identical opening move.

Further down: the situations our technicians see, anywhere in Conwy. Pick yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Llanrhos forecourt

Just at this point, nozzle still in your hand, it dawns on you that the cap you took off was the wrong one, there at the petrol pump. Possibly you are at the Asda, maybe at the JET, possibly somewhere else around Llanrhos.

What it means: this is the ideal place to find out. Still inside that tank, with nothing drawn onwards: that is where the AdBlue sits.

Next: avoid the urge to start it only to move away from the pump. A few things: a push into a bay with the staff assisting, the receipt kept, and a ring to us from where you stand. Draining it right at the pump is fine when it cannot be shifted, since the equipment is explosion-proof.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home in Llanrhos

The warning light had been on for days. Bought a bottle, poured it in outside the house, binned the empty — and at that point checked the cap again, after the fact. Just off Parc Lôn Pedr is not less likely from any other place.

In short: if the vehicle has not been driven since, it is nearly as good as finding out at the pump. Diesel and AdBlue keep separate: the AdBlue drops to the floor of your tank and stays there, no matter how long the night.

Your move: keys indoors, so nobody takes the vehicle off at breakfast. After that, ring. Your drive is where it is drained, be it in Llanrhos or Deganwy. Late-night empties beside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.

Llanrhos: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

A mile or two beyond filling up, the motor started playing up: rough running, smoke, less power, warnings on the dash. Grange Road, say, or the route to Bangor — a run of under 15 miles.

The upshot: your system has drawn AdBlue through already. Distance sets how deep it goes: filter and pipework to begin with, then the injection pump and every injector. More driving, more restarts: deeper it goes.

Stop somewhere safe — that is the first job — then switch everything off. On the Moreton Spur, under 50 miles from Llanrhos, that means the next junction, not the services further on. No trial restarts: clearing isn't something AdBlue does. Let us hear the mileage driven as you call.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

It is a car you have had for a week. Unknown to you, the two fillers are next to each other here — unlike your own vehicle, which has no AdBlue or stores it in another spot. Wherever you happen to be across Conwy, any driver could slip up.

Put simply: one extra step on top of the cases above, and those depend on if it has run. Many rental and fleet agreements require the owner's sign-off for work.

What to do: call the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's quicker settled before our engineers turn up than after. If you're stranded in the car park at Deganwy, or by St Hilary's, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the car off.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Llanrhos?

Truthfully, the only answer might be that you think so. What cap was taken off, you can't recall; meanwhile the bottle feels less than expected, and a whiff of ammonia hangs by your filler. The gates of the local primary school in a rush, say, or someone's driveway out in Esgyryn.

The upshot: the motor is not harmed by some AdBlue spilled on the outside. AdBlue inside the diesel tank does. If there is AdBlue in your tank, firing up the vehicle would pull it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

What to do: treat it as if it went in. Do not crank it. Call us and describe what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out free of AdBlue than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Llanrhos AdBlue drain

Whatever the case, a single opening is used. Anywhere your vehicle stands — Castle View's car park, a road beside Bryniau Lookout Tower, a driveway, a forecourt — the van arrives and we ask for the fluid, the amount, and if your motor has been run. Your price comes on the call, ahead of anyone setting off, and the answers shape the work.

Then the tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not rinse out on its own. Last come the filter, flushed or replaced if necessary; fresh diesel; and a test of the car. The majority of unrun vehicles are a half-hour job from the moment our technicians turn up.

Finally, our engineers start it. Before our engineers leave, it's tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel. When it is spotted soon, the vehicle very seldom has permanent damage, and the entire job happens where it is. Nothing is paid upfront, payment happens on the day, and you get what the insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Worth remembering: lots of insurers include misfuelling cover, and so a check of your documents as you wait is worthwhile.
