Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lochside

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till the engine sucks it through. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Lochside. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lochside

To do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Give us a postcode starting KA8 9, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

  • Shifting your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along Wilson Street.
  • Emptying that tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

The attendants working at any Lochside filling station — the Tesco included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Craigie last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be first through once your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car parked in Lochside. Only inside the tank, it stays stable. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Lochside

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the JET. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Lochside or out in Whitletts, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Anywhere in South Ayrshire your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Lochside

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts invite it. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up is rushed outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in. Close to Somerset Gardens, someone tips a container in on that drive after work. One more version: darkness, the car park by The Wallace, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

Hired motors, brand-new motors, company vehicles, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it the most. An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be around Lochside or the remainder of South Ayrshire.

Lochside: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from King George V Park, say, or midway across Lochside. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M77, under 15 miles from Lochside, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

A quick hop across Lochside to the car park by Heathfield Community Centre is one thing; heading towards Glasgow, under 50 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the flushing where the car has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. Permanent damage is very rare if it's caught early.

Lochside: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A road by Somerset Park, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the car has come to rest in Lochside, our technicians travel to it. Three answers decide the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about the amount, and if the motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than with petrol. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime the system on clean diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Lochside or in a bay by Newton-On-Ayr. Our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

About Lochside

Lochside is a coastal suburban area in South Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Braehead and Newton on Ayr. Lochside sits at a low elevation of around 13 metres, looking out over the coastal scenery. Lochside is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing, which reflects the area's relatively modern development. Lochside is located approximately 30 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter-friendly location.

AdBlue drains around Lochside and across South Ayrshire

AdBlue call-outs in Lochside are passed to teams that cover the towns near it — Braehead, Newton on Ayr plus Wallacetown — and most of South Ayrshire further out, throughout KA postcodes. Guessing won't help by a county line or anywhere hard to describe; phone and check.

No towing is needed. In Lochside, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is drained where it stands, whether in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

Lochside: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, so no single price is fair. What changes the price is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Northfield Bowling Complex.

For that reason, each enquiry from Lochside opens with the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, whether it ran — before any quote. With those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Lochside: still beside the car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to leave it. Motor off, keys out, ignition off. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Lochside or anywhere around South Ayrshire.
