AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Lockwood? Keep It Switched Off
If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the motor off and leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where your car sits in Lockwood. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
Lockwood, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once
Do these:
- Pocket your keys, and that stops someone switching the electrics on.
- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so do not throw it away.
- Tell us a postcode starting HD1 3, or whichever street is nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.
Do not:
- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch up Meltham Road.
- Emptying that tank yourself by the road isn't one to try.
On a forecourt around Lockwood, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the pump. On the drive, the vehicle stays just where it was left.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was meant to go through one.
Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — quite unlike fuel. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Rashcliffe overnight and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it will be first through if the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.
Once it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. A car left standing in Lockwood with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. And there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.
Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?
Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the whole problem. Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it does nothing.
The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the following fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Lockwood or out in Walpole, does more harm than almost any other mistake.
As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere in West Yorkshire your car has stopped.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Lockwood
After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs allow it. Usually it's never the filling station: someone buys a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.
Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Mount Pleasant Primary School. Near Hanson Lane, someone pours a container in on the drive in the evening. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Shoulder of Mutton, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.
It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet car, or the spare car in a family with both fuel types — the cars drivers know least. Keep it switched off: that's the first response to the same slip, wherever in Lockwood or the rest of West Yorkshire you are.
Lockwood: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.
You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Salford Village Green or halfway across Lockwood. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.
Exit the M62, under 5 miles from Lockwood, at the next junction and park safely, not carrying on.
A quick hop across Lockwood to the car park by Hanfia Masjid is one thing; driving towards Bradford, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.
There is more to rinse out once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it is noticed soon.
Lockwood: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel
The car remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Lockwood Baptist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Lockwood, and our van travels to it. Three answers decide the job, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly the amount, plus whether the engine has turned over.
The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is drained, on the spot. The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of the car. Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.
Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last. At that point our engineers fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay outside the nearest station or a drive in Lockwood. Before we go, we check it's running correctly with new diesel in. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Lockwood and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

A van that comes to you fits Lockwood, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring your car to us, because we drain it there, on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.
What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Lockwood
No flat price could be fair, because each job differs. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Madni Jamia Masjid.
With that in mind, each call from Lockwood opens with the same trio — what got in, what quantity, if the engine ran — before any quote. Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.
Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
