AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Long Newton? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm starts once it's sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Long Newton. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Long Newton

To do:

  • Pocket your keys, which prevents someone switching the power on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it out.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a TS21 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down The Green.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Long Newton forecourt you're on, the BP included. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in Oak Tree last night and never switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody touches your key.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it's removed from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle sitting in Long Newton. Only in the tank, it stays stable. Then there is the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Long Newton

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the another forecourt nearby, and this issue is diluted fuel. Damage only comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in that tank, it does nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the vehicle sits in Sadberge or the heart of Long Newton, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever across Durham your vehicle sits.

Long Newton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one intends it. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Mary's Church of England Primary School. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to The Close. One more version: dim light, the car park by The Vane Arms, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet car, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people use the least. Anywhere across Durham, Long Newton included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Long Newton?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

Maybe returning from The Village Green, or part way across Long Newton, your motor may go rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or stall. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the A1(M), under 10 miles from Long Newton, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Long Newton to the car park by St Mary's Church is one matter; driving towards Durham, under 25 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

Long Newton: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road near Larberry Pastures settlement site, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Long Newton, and the van travels to it. The job rests on three replies, which our engineers ask for before all else — what was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is drained, on the spot. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your engine hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the system is primed with clean diesel. After that we start the car and you head off, whether from a parking space at Teesside Airport or a driveway in Long Newton. The test before we leave is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Long Newton?

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St John.

Ahead of a quote, not after, each call from Long Newton opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, and whether the engine ran. With them, the range shrinks to a single fixed number.

Before a van sets off, you hear the quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
