Lostock: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the car stands in Lostock, is usually all it takes when found before your engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels on the roads around Lostock and Bottom o th Moor carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what filler to use. The error lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Lostock

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Academy Way, or outside The Barnstormers on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new vehicle.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Cooper Turning or the heart of Lostock: it takes the same few seconds either way.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Lostock

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Lostock forecourt or a driveway out in Wingates, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which belongs in each filler right there.
  • The handbook shows which it is if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — at Horwich Parkway's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Greater Manchester, follow this routine.

  • Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and not in a rush by Harrier Close at the roadside.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read it.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Finish when that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the own spout.
  • Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there. Do not go on to stage five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Lostock?

Do not start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Tesco, Asda or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car away when asked. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Lostock.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. Lostock sits under a mile from the M61; there, take the next junction. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Lostock is less a job than a run of under 15 miles towards Salford, and so say.

Lostock: what happens when our technicians get there

By Claypool Primary School, near Rock Over Climbing Bolton or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because those replies decide this work and our price. During the call itself, you hear our price — before dispatch.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. That is why it matters more. Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed. Your engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers go.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
