AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Loughton? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully purged where the vehicle stands around Loughton. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Loughton: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, take the keys out.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and about what quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.
  • Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting IG10 1, or simply the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to start the motor.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch up Golding's Hill is too far to drive the car.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you move the vehicle away from the island if you're on a forecourt around Loughton, whether it is the Esso or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

It doesn't blend. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from. When the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, and that is why a car topped up in High Beech last night and not switched on remains the straightforward case, as long as nobody turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there. Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting around Loughton. Only in the tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Loughton

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main problem. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Theydon Bois or the centre of Loughton equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere the car has stopped around Essex.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Loughton

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. The refill gets hurried outside Staples Road Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped in. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Church Hill. Otherwise, after dark by The Plume of Feathers, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, brand-new cars, company ones, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuel types. Wherever in Essex, Loughton as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Loughton?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Ash Greer or halfway across Loughton. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off rather than testing it again. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the M11, under 3 miles from Loughton, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Loughton to park beside St John the Baptist and a drive of under 15 miles towards London are very distinct jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Loughton: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road near Christopher Cutchey, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Loughton, and our van comes to it. The work rests on three replies, which our engineers get first — what was put in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one when the tank is emptied, on the spot. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't wash away by itself. A test of the vehicle comes last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, swapped. Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The final step is to bleed your system on fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking space outside Chingford or a drive around Loughton, that is where our technicians start it and you head off. Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in. Since the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Loughton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single price would be fair, because each job differs. What shifts the price is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Arthur Bacot.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Loughton begins by asking the same trio — what went in, what quantity, whether it ran — before any quote. Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Look at your insurance while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
