Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Northfield, as well as Low Field, run on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel. AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

There is a filler on each tank. Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the mistake lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Low Field: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off St. Thomas More Road, perhaps at Drum and Cymbals on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it takes place in Anlaby Park or the middle of Low Field, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Low Field

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Wolfreton or a forecourt in Low Field, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.
  • On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show what belongs in which filler just there.
  • Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Hessle.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is around East Riding of Yorkshire — a simple routine to follow.

  • Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Delius Close.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Don't carry on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Low Field already?

Short list, then. First: your motor remains off. Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump. If you are on your own driveway around Low Field, leave the car where it stands.

Already started? Stop once it's safe, then switch off. Low Field lies under 15 miles from the M62; on it, use the next junction. Mileage counts — a short hop across Low Field makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Kingston upon Hull — so tell us about how far it went.

Our arrival around Low Field, and what takes place next

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Thomas More Voluntary Catholic Academy, close to Men in Sheds Haltemprice or on your own driveway. Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask. You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is drained. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. Hence it counts more. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
