Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Low Fold: Why It Occurs
Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Around Low Fold, catching it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot. Reading before the event? Then the rest explains how it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?
Diesel goes to your engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven around Low Fold and Swain House carry another liquid as well. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.
There's a filler for every tank. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side under one flap. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in that gap that the error happens.
How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Low Fold?
It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
On a driveway off Low Fold before work, or in the car park outside The Malt Kiln heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.
The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar car.
Nothing stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Low Fold or out in Bolton.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
Check these first, on a forecourt in Low Fold or a driveway over in Bolton Woods. A few seconds, no more.
- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says where it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Bradford Forster Square? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light goes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
For the day the warning appears — anywhere it is across West Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Bolton Lane.
- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.
If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Skip stage five altogether.
Low Fold: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?
The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor. Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.
At a forecourt — Shell, Texaco or another — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle away, if you ask. If you are on your own drive around Low Fold, leave the car where it sits.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run. Low Fold lies under 3 miles from the M606; there, take the first junction. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Low Fold is less work than a trip of under 3 miles to Bradford, so say.
What happens when our engineers arrive in Low Fold
Outside Grove House Primary School, near Bayt Al Qaim Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — which liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask. No one sets off until you've had the quote by phone.
Then the tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. That is why it counts more. A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. Then we start the engine and confirm it runs correctly before we go.
Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house. Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

Shifting the car is not necessary. Wherever it sits — beside door to nowhere, on a layby heading to Peel Park, on a drive — that is where it is cleared. Assuming won't help behind St James Community Hall, on a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe; ring and ask.
Low Fold drivers: the short version
Before you pour, read the cap. If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around West Yorkshire.
