AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Low Green? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition as well. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble begins once it is pulled through the pump — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Low Green, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has run. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Low Green

Do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not throw it away.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting HG3 2, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: your motor remains off.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Silverdale Close.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Low Green forecourt you are on, the Independant or any other. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Moke Hill last night and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it touches till it is removed from the system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Low Green makes it worse. In that tank only, waiting does nothing. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Low Green

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the another forecourt nearby, and the problem is thinned fuel. No harm comes as long as it stays unused, blended into your diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Low Green or out in The Holme, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there's good news. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere across North Yorkshire the car has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Low Green?

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one intends it. A container picked up while heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Darley Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Prospect Cottages. One more version: dim light, a pub car park by The Wellington Inn, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

Hired motors, brand-new motors, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it most. Leave it off: that's the first response to the same mistake, wherever around Low Green or the remainder of North Yorkshire you are.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Low Green?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing through the filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may show up, perhaps part way across Low Green or returning from Low Wood. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the A1(M), under 15 miles from Low Green, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Low Green to the car park by CCCC is a very different job from a run towards Ripon, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. When it is caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Low Green

The car stays where it is, whether that's a road near Christ Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Low Green, and our van comes to it. Three replies shape the work, and so first we ask what was put in, about what quantity, and if the engine has run.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. What remains from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the motor has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes last. Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside Harrogate or on a driveway in Low Green. The test before we leave is that it runs properly on clean diesel. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Low Green

Since the jobs differ, a single price would not be honest. Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind tumulus.

Ahead of any figure, never after, every enquiry from Low Green begins with three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if it ran. With those replies, the range narrows to a single fixed number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Check your policy while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
