Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Moor: Why It Happens
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully rinsed where the car sits around Lower Moor. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Many modern diesels in Acre, like those in Lower Moor, carry on two fluids; your engine takes only the diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Each tank has its own filler. Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side behind one flap. Diesel gets filled on each filling station call-out, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The error lives in that gap.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Lower Moor
Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off St Stephens Street before work, or in the car park outside Boltmakers Rest on the way home.
Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started. Whether it occurs in Mumps or the middle of Lower Moor, it is the same few seconds.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Rhodes Bank or a forecourt in Lower Moor, check these. They take a couple of seconds.
- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars show what belongs in which filler just there.
- The handbook shows which it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — at Mills Hill's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank
On the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is across Greater Manchester — a routine to follow.
- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush by Egerton Street on the verge.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.
If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.
AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Lower Moor?
What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.
On a forecourt — Tesco, Texaco or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, if you ask. On your own drive in Lower Moor? Then your car remains where it is.
Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. Leave the Broadway — under 3 miles out of Lower Moor — at the first exit. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Lower Moor is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Manchester, and so say.
Lower Moor: what occurs when our engineers get there
Wherever your car has stopped, whether outside Beever Primary School, near St Stephen & All Martyrs or at home, our van comes to it. Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and if it has run — so we ask. That price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.
The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is emptied. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. That is why it counts more. A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. The motor is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.
Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
