AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Morden? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully rinsed where your car sits around Lower Morden. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lower Morden: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Take your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not throw it away.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting SM4 4, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Never:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the vehicle: your engine remains off.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Tudor Drive.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

At a forecourt in Lower Morden, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump. On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It does not blend. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Bushey Mead overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm. It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it is cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight around Lower Morden makes it worse. Inside that tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the main problem. No damage is done as long as it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only once the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Motspur Park or the centre of Lower Morden alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in Greater London your vehicle has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lower Morden: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts allow it. It mostly happens at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Aragon Primary School the top-up is hurried. After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway near Cardinal Avenue. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Morden Brook, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, new cars, company motors, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most. Wherever you are in Lower Morden or the rest of Greater London, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lower Morden?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. It's been sucked through your filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Maybe coming back from King George's Field, or part way across Lower Morden, the engine might run rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. No restarting to test: pull over once safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Lower Morden sits under 10 miles from the M25; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Lower Morden to the car park by Aragon Public Library is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the car has ended up, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. When it is caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Lower Morden?

Wherever it has stopped in Lower Morden — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Bow Lane Scout Centre — the van comes to your car. The work rests on three answers, which our technicians ask for before all else — what was put in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel. You set off as soon as our engineers have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Lower Morden or in a bay outside St Helier. It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our technicians go. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lower Morden: the cost of fixing it

No single figure would be honest, because every job is different. Three things move the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Morden Assembly Hall.

What went in, how much, and whether it ran: every Lower Morden call begins with precisely those, before any quote, never afterwards. Given those replies, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

Our quote is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, dig out your policy: many cover misfuelling.
