AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Luddenden? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system draws it in. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Luddenden. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Luddenden: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting HX2 6, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way up Stocks Lane.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Luddenden forecourt you are on, the BP or any other. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was meant to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very place the intake draws from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Brearley last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm. It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it's removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels. Overnight, a vehicle parked in Luddenden with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is only in that tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a second form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Luddenden

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in your tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Luddenden or out in Mount Tabor, does more harm than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits just inside the tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has stopped around West Yorkshire.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Luddenden?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it is not the filling station: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Luddenden CofE School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Halifax Lane. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car after dark, parked in the car park outside Lord Nelson Inn.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, new ones, fleet ones, and the other car of a family with both fuel types. Keep it switched off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Luddenden or the rest of West Yorkshire you are.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Luddenden, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. It's been pulled through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Railes Close Open Area or halfway across Luddenden. No starting it again to check: pull over once it is safe, then switch everything off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M62, under 10 miles from Luddenden, at the next junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so driving for Bradford, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Luddenden to the car park by Parish Church of Saint Mary's Luddenden. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once your engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

Luddenden: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Luddenden: a side street near Luddenden Youth Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies decide the job, so first our engineers ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not wash out by itself. A test of the vehicle comes at the end, once clean diesel is added and your filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Mytholmroyd or on a driveway in Luddenden. The check before our technicians leave is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Luddenden: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so not one single price is fair. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open driveway is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind The Old Co-op Community Room.

Before any quote, never after, each enquiry from Luddenden opens with three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if it ran. Their replies narrow the range right down to a single figure.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is travelling, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
