Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lyme Grove: Why It Occurs

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Lyme Grove. The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen round Lyme Grove and Woolfall Heath carry another fluid as well. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Many of motors have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in the gap that the slip happens.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Lyme Grove?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Lyme Close, or outside The Clock on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on. Whether it takes place in Longview or the middle of Lyme Grove, it is the same few seconds.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Lyme Grove forecourt or a drive over in Huyton with Roby, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Prescot? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Merseyside that is.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Knowsley Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Stage five stays out.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lyme Grove?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine. Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, Tesco or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car away if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Lyme Grove.

When the motor has run already, stop safely and turn it off. On the M57, under a mile from Lyme Grove, that means the next junction. A short hop across Lyme Grove is a smaller job than a run towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

When we turn up in Lyme Grove, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Knowsley Lane Primary School, close to Wire sculpture or on your own driveway. Both the work and the price rest on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask. During the phone call itself, you are told our price — ahead of dispatch.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
