AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lynnwood? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep your ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor sucks it round. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Lynnwood. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lynnwood: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting TD9 0, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's pointless.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way down Haggis Ha' Brae.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Lynnwood forecourt — the Sainsbury's included — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask. At home, your car remains exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same spot the pickup sucks from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Hawick last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there. A car left sitting around Lynnwood with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Lynnwood

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a problem of thin fuel. No damage comes as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once the engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Lynnwood or out in Wilton, does more harm than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Scottish Borders the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Lynnwood

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a container driving home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the car. Someone tips the container in at home, right off Burnflat Lane, as the day ends. One more version: darkness, the car park by Stags Head, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor of a family with both fuel types. Anywhere around Scottish Borders, Lynnwood included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lynnwood?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been pulled through your filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps coming back from Whitlaw Wood, or midway across Lynnwood, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

Lynnwood lies under 50 miles from the A74(M); if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Lynnwood to the car park by Old Mortality Tablets is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the motor has been run. Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Lynnwood?

The car stays put, whether that's a road near Bill McLaren Stone, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Lynnwood, and the van travels to it. Which fluid was put in, about how much, plus if the engine has turned over: our technicians ask first, because those decide the job.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is emptied, on the spot. What remains from AdBlue won't wash away unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to bleed the system on clean diesel. You head off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Lynnwood or in a space at the nearest station. Before we leave, our engineers confirm it is running smoothly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lynnwood: the cost of fixing it

Because each callouts differ, a flat figure would not be honest. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind Teri Lynn Power Memorial.

Ahead of a quote, not after, every enquiry from Lynnwood begins with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the engine ran. When those are answered, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
