AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Machan? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Machan. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Machan, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

  • Take your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it out.
  • Give us a postcode starting ML9 1, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Don't do these:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave it off.
  • Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Quarry Road.
  • Beside the road, do not attempt emptying it on your own.

On a forecourt around Machan, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car away from the pump. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It does not blend. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Burnhead overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it reaches until it is removed from the system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages. A motor left standing in Machan with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Asda. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in your tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Machan or out in Meadowhill, costs more than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has come to rest across South Lanarkshire.

Machan: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. Mostly it's not the forecourt: someone buys a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Manse View. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Music room, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, brand-new vehicles, fleet motors, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it the most. An identical mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be around Machan or the rest of South Lanarkshire.

Machan: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any might appear, perhaps part way across Machan or returning from Robert Smillie Park. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of testing it again. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M74, under a mile from Machan, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Machan to the car park by Larkhall Baptist Church is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Caught early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Machan

Anywhere it has stopped in Machan — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside Robert Smillie Park — the van comes to your vehicle. What got in, roughly how much, and if your engine has turned over: our engineers check first, since those shape the work.

Next, emptying your tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains will not flush out by itself. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming the system with new diesel comes last. Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, by Larkhall or on a drive in Machan. Before we go, our technicians make sure it is running correctly with new diesel in. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains across South Lanarkshire, Machan included

AdBlue jobs around Machan go to teams that serve the towns around it — Larkhall, Strutherhill plus Hareleeshill — and much of South Lanarkshire further out, across ML postcodes. Guessing doesn't help by a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

Machan is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Machan: the cost of fixing it

Since each callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be fair. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind Robert Smillie Memorial Park Gate.

What was put in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Machan call begins with precisely those, before any figure, never afterwards. Those replies narrow a range right down to a single number.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
