AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Maddington? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where the car sits in Maddington. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Maddington

Things to do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a SP3 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Do not do these:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch up Tanners Lane is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying your tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Maddington forecourt you are on, the Murco or any other. At home, the vehicle stays exactly where it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Rollestone overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it's removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Maddington with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only in the tank, it doesn't. And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Maddington

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Homanton or the middle of Maddington.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in Wiltshire the car sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Maddington?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. A container picked up while heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Hurrying, outside Shrewton CofE Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car. Close to High Street, a driver tips a bottle in at home after work. Else, in dim light by The Plume of Feathers, your car gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet cars, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it the most. Anywhere in Wiltshire, Maddington as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

Maddington: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. It's been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps returning from The Recreation Ground, or part way across Maddington, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Maddington lies under 25 miles from the M4; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

A quick hop across Maddington to the car park by Saint Mary's, Shrewton is one thing; heading for Salisbury, under 10 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has ended up. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's noticed early.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Maddington: what it takes

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a road near St George, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Maddington, and our van comes to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your motor has run, because those answers determine the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after the tank is emptied, right there. Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel. Then our technicians start the engine and you set off, whether from a parking space at Salisbury or a drive around Maddington. The test before our technicians leave is that it runs properly on clean diesel. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue drains across Wiltshire, Maddington included

AdBlue call-outs around Maddington are passed to vans that serve the places near it — Shrewton, Elston as well as Orcheston — and most of Wiltshire further out, throughout SP postcodes. Near a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Asking is better than assuming, so phone.

A mobile service fits Maddington, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your vehicle to us, because our technicians drain it on the spot, in a drive, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

Maddington: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Orcheston Village Hall.

Before a quote, not afterwards, every call from Maddington begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.
