AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Mag Dale, and What to Do Next

One fact matters above all once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and it is whether your engine has been started afterwards. Out in Armitage Bridge or right in Mag Dale, an unrun engine must remain that way. Phone 0333 366 0103 with your key and motor both off. In Mag Dale, that is typically drained and flushed where it stands. Already started? Pull over when safe, then turn it off. Stage one remains unchanged, even though the work is bigger.

Compare your case to a situation from the ones below, anywhere across West Yorkshire you are.

At the petrol pump around Mag Dale: AdBlue in a diesel

You are at the pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Somewhere around Mag Dale, then — Texaco, Fitzpatrick Fuels, or anywhere else close by.

The point: of all places to notice, this is the best. No pump has pulled it in, so the AdBlue stays only in your tank.

What to do: do not get back in and start it to clear the pump. Get the attendants to help pushing it to a bay, hold on to the receipt, then ring us from there. Draining it there at the petrol pump is fine if it cannot be moved, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

Mag Dale, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dash had been warning you. Only by the recycling, the empty container in your hand, did you glance back at the cap you'd used on the driveway. Homes just off Magdale get hit as much as everywhere else.

Meaning? As long as your car hasn't been driven since, it's second to the forecourt case. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of that tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

Next: the keys in the house, and so nobody takes your vehicle off first thing. After that, ring. Your driveway is where it gets emptied, be it in Mag Dale or Newtown. Late-night drains outside a house are no problem: the pumps are quiet.

On the road around Mag Dale with AdBlue in a diesel

A mile or two beyond filling up, the engine started playing up: roughness, smoke, less power, warnings on the dash. White Gate, say, or the route towards Bradford — a trip of under 15 miles.

The point: the system has pulled AdBlue in by now. The injection pump and every injector get it too on a longer run, once the filter and pipework have it. Each restart, like each mile, pushes it deeper.

Stop safely — that is the first job — then switch it off. On the Outlane Interchange, under 5 miles from Mag Dale, that means the next junction, not the services further on. It will not have cleared, so there is no sense starting it again to check. Tell us know the mileage covered as you call.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

Seven days ago, it was unknown to you. Unknown to you, the AdBlue and diesel inlets sit side by side here — unlike your own car, which has no AdBlue or stores it in another spot. Any driver, anywhere across West Yorkshire, could do it.

Put simply: an extra stage on top of the situations above, which turn on if it's run. Plenty of rental and company contracts require the owner's sign-off before work.

Settling it before the van arrives is quicker, so phone the rental company or your fleet manager, then us. Hanging on for a reply in the car park at Honley, or near St Mary? Leave your car off throughout.

Mag Dale: unsure if it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Now and then, "I think so" is all you can truthfully say. A faint ammonia whiff hangs near your filler, the bottle feels too light, and the cap you took off is hard to recall. Possibly it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Honley CofE (VC) Junior, Infant and Nursery School, or on a friend's drive in Honley Moor.

The point: your engine isn't harmed by some AdBlue splashed on the filler. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. If there is AdBlue in the tank, firing up the car will draw it in, and it would not tell you which either.

Next: assume it went in, and keep the motor off. Phone with the details: we would sooner confirm a clean tank than drain one after your motor has been run.

Mag Dale: what every AdBlue drain has in common

Whichever scenario you are in, the job starts the same way. Filling station, drive, The Allied's car park or a street beside Southgate Theatre — the van comes to your car, and three questions come next: what fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run. Answers shape the work; the price comes on the call whilst nobody has set off yet.

Then your tank is drained and your system flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Finally come your filter, cleaned or replaced as needed; clean diesel; and a check of your vehicle. Where your motor has not been started, allow about half an hour once we arrive, in most jobs.

The last step is starting it. Before our technicians head off, it is checked to make sure it runs correctly on new diesel. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual. Paying comes that day, never upfront. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer. Dig out your insurance before we arrive: misfuelling cover is built into many policies.
