AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — but many newer diesels driven around Marle Green and Sharps Corner hold a second liquid too. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap. Diesel goes in on every filling station call-out, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Marle Green: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Laundry Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside The May Garland.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on. Whether it happens in Vines Cross or the middle of Marle Green, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Marle Green

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Marle Green forecourt or a driveway over in Burlow, take a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

  • Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.
  • Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.
  • Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — at Buxted's car park, say — not once the light appears.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across East Sussex that is.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Horebeech Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Step five stays out.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Marle Green already?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine. The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off. Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Local Fuels, the Shell or somewhere else. Your own driveway around Marle Green is the place it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The next junction means where to leave if you're on the M23, under 25 miles from Marle Green. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Marle Green.

Our arrival around Marle Green, and what takes place next

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it outside Maynards Green Community Primary School, beside Christ Church or at home, the van travels to it. Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which fluid, which quantity, and if it's run — so we ask. During the call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Before leaving, we start the car and make sure that it's running properly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
