AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Marnock? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The trouble starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Marnock. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Marnock: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting ML5 2, or simply the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your motor remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, so leave the car off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Garnqueen Crescent.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Ask the attendants to help you move the car away from the pumps if you're at a forecourt around Marnock, whether it's the BP or elsewhere. On the drive, the car stays just where it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. No part inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — quite different from fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A car filled on a drive in Gartcosh overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the motor turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; and, since it eats at certain metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning in Marnock makes it worse. In the tank only, time costs nothing. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Marnock

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel. No damage comes while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Marnock or out in Townhead, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, wherever the car has come to rest across North Lanarkshire.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Marnock

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it's not the forecourt: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. The refill gets hurried outside the local primary school, because your dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Glenheath Drive. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Brickworx Bar & Brasserie, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, brand-new motors, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Wherever across North Lanarkshire, Marnock included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Marnock?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may show up, perhaps midway across Marnock or coming back from Glenboig Park. Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave it off instead of restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

Marnock lies under a mile from the M73; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Marnock to the car park by Glenboig Life Centre. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is noticed quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Marnock?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Marnock: a side street close to Our Lady & St Joseph, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers decide the job, and so first our technicians ask which fluid went in, about the amount, plus whether the motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since residue will not flush out unaided. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if the motor has not run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at Gartcosh or on a driveway around Marnock. We make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue drains across North Lanarkshire, Marnock included

Marnoch, Garnqueen and Glenboig are among the towns around Marnock that the same vans reach, along with much of North Lanarkshire further out, over the ML postcode area. Ring and check instead of guessing when you're by a border, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Anywhere the car sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we empty it there, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits Marnock, a small village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Marnock?

Since the jobs vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest. Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind War Memorial.

What was put in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: every Marnock call opens by asking exactly that, ahead of any figure, never afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight price.

The quote is given on the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Check your insurance while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
