AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around Marton Grove and Berwick Hills carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Marton Grove?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Castle Way before work, or in the car park at Saltersgill Hotel on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles come second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it occurs in Grove Hill or the middle of Marton Grove, it's the same few seconds.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Easterside or a forecourt around Marton Grove.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.
  • Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside James Cook University Hospital.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever you are around North Yorkshire — a routine to use.

  • Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Kilton Court.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • The two behind a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel filler stays shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That is where you stop. Step five stays off limits.

Marton Grove: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with no starting the engine. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Esso, Morrisons or any other — the staff will usually help roll your car clear, when you ask. Your own driveway in Marton Grove is the place it should stay.

Already started? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off. Marton Grove lies under 15 miles from the A1(M); on it, take the first exit. About how far did it go? Hopping across Marton Grove is less work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Durham, and so say.

When we arrive around Marton Grove, what occurs?

Outside Beech Grove Primary School, near Grove Hill Library or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so we ask. You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before we go, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
