AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Matson: How It Happens and How to Avoid It
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. Normally, when your engine has not run, it is drained and fully purged where your car sits around Matson. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers
No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Matson and Upton St Leonards run, with diesel for the engine. AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.
Different tanks, separate fillers. Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap. Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly. It's in that gap that the error lives.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Matson?
Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.
Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Matson Lane, or heading home in the car park outside The Three Oaks.
Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.
A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on. Robinswood or the heart of Matson: it takes the same few seconds in both.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Whaddon or a forecourt in Matson, check these. They take a couple of seconds.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.
- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Gloucester's car park, say — not when the light appears.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Gloucestershire that is.
- Not in a rush on the side of Bazeley Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.
- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.
If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Skip step five altogether.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Matson?
Do not start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.
If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the pump. Your own drive in Matson is where it stays.
Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off. Come off the M5 — under a mile out of Matson — at the next exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Gloucester, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Matson.
Matson: what takes place when we get there
Outside Hillside Primary School, near Gloucester Ski & Snowboard Centre or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it. Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — which liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask. No one sets off until you have heard the quote by phone.
Then that tank is drained and your system cleaned thoroughly. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car. After that our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before leaving.
Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take about half an hour after our technicians are there. Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Shifting the vehicle is not necessary. Anywhere it stands — beside Saint Hilda's Hall, on a lay-by heading to Matson Wood, at home — that's where it gets emptied. Assuming doesn't help behind Matson House, on a boundary, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.
For Matson motorists, the short version
Pour no AdBlue till you've read the cap. Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere around Gloucestershire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
