Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mauchline

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once your pump begins drawing it. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle stands around Mauchline. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Mauchline, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

  • Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it away.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting KA5 5, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Castle Street.
  • Emptying your tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Mauchline filling station — the Thames included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Catrine last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through once your engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm. It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, working on any part it touches until it is removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight around Mauchline makes it worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting does nothing. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Mauchline

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel. Blended through your diesel and left unused, it's no threat at that stage; running your engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, and so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Crosshill or the centre of Mauchline alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever around East Ayrshire the vehicle sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Mauchline?

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it. A container picked up when heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Kilmarnock Road. Otherwise, after dark by Poosie Nansie's, the vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet car, or the spare car of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people know least. Same mistake, same first step — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Mauchline or the remainder of East Ayrshire.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mauchline?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Nursery Plantation or halfway across Mauchline. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M77, under 10 miles from Mauchline, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why crossing Mauchline to park near Burns House Museum and a drive of under 25 miles towards Glasgow are such different jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has come to a stop. If it is caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Mauchline?

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Mauchline: a side street near Mauchline Parish Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers shape the job, so before anything else we ask what got in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your engine has run.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. Residue from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol. Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The final step is to prime your system on clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, by Auchinleck or on a driveway around Mauchline. The check before we go is that it runs properly on clean diesel. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

Mauchline and East Ayrshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the KA postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue jobs around Mauchline reach most of East Ayrshire too, Haugh, Auchmillan and Whiteflat included. Phone and ask instead of guessing if you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Mauchline is a rural village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

Mauchline: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat price could be fair, since every job differs. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Mauchline Castle.

That's why each call from Mauchline starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. Given them, a range shrinks to one firm number.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Look at your policy while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

Mauchline: still beside the vehicle?
