AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Maw Green? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till the engine sucks it round. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands in Maw Green. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Maw Green: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So nobody can turn your ignition on, take your keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CW1 4, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Shifting your vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is wasted.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch along Green Field Way.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

At a forecourt in Maw Green, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. A vehicle filled on a drive in Lane Ends yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when your motor turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Maw Green leaves things worse. Inside that tank only, waiting does nothing. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Maw Green

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Asda Express's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the main issue. It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Crewe or the middle of Maw Green.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Cheshire the car is standing.

Maw Green: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one means it. It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Monks Coppenhall Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Groby Road. Another version: dim light, a pub car park by The Horse Shoe, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the other car in a home with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know the least. Same mistake, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you are around Maw Green or the rest of Cheshire.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Maw Green, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Haslemere Way Pocket Park or halfway across Maw Green. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M6, under 5 miles from Maw Green, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

A quick hop across Maw Green to the car park by Hopes and Beams is one thing; driving for Stoke-on-Trent, under 15 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted early.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Maw Green

The car remains where it is, whether that is a street near Cumberland Sports Arena, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Maw Green, and our van travels to it. What got in, roughly the quantity, and if the engine has been run: our technicians ask first, since those shape the job.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers turn up, provided the engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Maw Green or in a bay at Crewe. The check before our technicians head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Maw Green: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs differ, a flat price would not be fair. The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Crewe Crematorium.

That's why every call from Maw Green starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run. With them, the range shrinks to a single fixed number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
