AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mayfield? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off and keep your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens until your motor sucks it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Mayfield, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has run. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Mayfield, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a OL16 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not do these:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition the car.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch down Reservoir Street.
  • Emptying that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

The staff working at any Mayfield forecourt — the Shell included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

It does not blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake draws its supply from. A car topped up on a driveway in Newbold overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the engine turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. Overnight, a vehicle parked around Mayfield with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's only in that tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Morrisons. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Howarth Cross or the middle of Mayfield.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside your tank, the simplest section of the whole system to clear, anywhere your car has stopped around Greater Manchester.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Mayfield

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Usually it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. Hurrying, outside Belfield Community School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Waterman View. Or someone new to that flap refills your car in dim light, stopped in the car park by Entwistle Arms.

It occurs most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, wherever around Mayfield or the remainder of Greater Manchester you happen to be.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mayfield?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Firgrove Playing Field or halfway across Mayfield. Once you safely can, pull over and turn it off — without turning it on again to see. Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M62, under 3 miles from Mayfield, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, so heading for Manchester, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Mayfield to the car park by Bilal Masjid. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up. Permanent damage is very unusual when it is noticed soon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Mayfield

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Mayfield: a side street near St Ann, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job depends on three replies, which our technicians ask for first — what went in, the amount, and if your motor has run.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Residue from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than for petrol. Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your car. If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on fresh diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Rochdale or on a drive around Mayfield. Before we leave, we check it is running smoothly with new diesel in. As the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

A van that comes to you suits Mayfield, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring your car to us, because we empty it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

Mayfield: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the jobs vary, a flat price would not be fair. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Sacred Heart.

What was put in, what quantity, plus if it ran: each Mayfield enquiry opens with exactly those, ahead of any figure, not after. Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. While our engineer is on the way, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
