Mayland: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. In Mayland, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Mayland: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting CM3 6, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Never:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: your motor remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, so keep it off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Steeple Road.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Mayland forecourt you're on, the Texaco included. On your own drive, do not move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. From a dedicated reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It does not blend. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Latchingdon last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it is cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages. Overnight, a vehicle parked around Mayland with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just in the tank, it doesn't. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, which is a separate kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Mayland

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

Petrol put into a diesel on Woodfords Garage's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the whole issue. Blended into your diesel and left still, it is harmless at that stage; using your engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the vehicle sits in Mundon or the heart of Mayland, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Anywhere around Essex the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

Mayland: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs invite it. It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Maylandsea Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Mayland Green. Otherwise, in dim light outside Hardy's Bar & Grill, your vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a company motor, or the spare vehicle of a family with both fuel types — the cars drivers know the least. Wherever you're in Mayland or the rest of Essex, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Mayland, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Perhaps returning from Lawling Recreation Ground, or part way across Mayland, the motor may go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M25, under 25 miles from Mayland, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards Southend-on-Sea, under 10 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Mayland to the car park by St Lukes Chapel. Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after your engine has been run. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Mayland?

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a street beside St Barnabas, Mayland, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Mayland, and the van comes to it. Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the job.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear away on its own. Next, the filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a check of your car. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel. Whether it's a parking bay at Althorne or a drive around Mayland, that is where our technicians start the car and you set off. We confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving. Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

Maylandsea, Althorne and Steeple are among the places near Mayland that the same vans reach, along with much of Essex beyond, throughout the CM postcode area. Near a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Asking is better than assuming, so phone.

A van that comes to you suits Mayland, a coastal village: you have no need to bring the car to us, since our technicians drain it there, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Mayland?

No flat figure would be fair, because every job is different. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Parish Hall.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus if it ran: every Mayland enquiry opens with exactly that, ahead of any figure, not after. Those answers narrow the range down to one number.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your policy while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
