Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Middle Bourne: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. In Middle Bourne, catching it before your motor runs usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot. Here in advance? Then what follows covers why it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Middle Bourne and Wrecclesham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own. Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in that gap between them.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Middle Bourne?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Burnt Hill Road, perhaps at The Bat and Ball on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a new car.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the pour starts, nothing stops it. It's seconds, whether in The Bourne or bang in the centre of Middle Bourne.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Middle Bourne forecourt or a driveway over in Lower Bourne, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • The handbook shows which it lives if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a hire car or company car — from Farnham's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across Surrey the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Upper Bourne Lane.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Finish when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using its own spout.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Never carry on to stage five.

Middle Bourne: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Texaco, the BP or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Middle Bourne.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. On the M3, under 10 miles from Middle Bourne, that means the next junction. About how far did it go? Crossing Middle Bourne is smaller work than a run of under 25 miles towards Winchester, so say.

Middle Bourne: what takes place when our technicians turn up

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside 5th Farnham (Bourne) Scout Group, or by St Peter's CofE Primary School. The answers settle this work and the price, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run. You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle. The motor is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take about half an hour once we are there. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
