Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Middlefield: Why It Happens

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Langlees, as well as Middlefield, carry on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers. Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side under one flap. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Middlefield

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Castings Road before work, or in the car park outside The Auld Vic on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on. Whether it occurs in Ladysmill or the middle of Middlefield, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Middlefield

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Middlefield forecourt or a drive over in Bainsford, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

  • Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Falkirk Grahamston.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Falkirk the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Middlefield Road.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Leave out stage five entirely.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Middlefield already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine. Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump. Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Thames or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump. If you're on your own driveway around Middlefield, leave the vehicle where it sits.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Middlefield lies under a mile from the M9; on it, use the next exit. A short hop across Middlefield is a smaller job than a run towards Stirling, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

What takes place when our technicians get there around Middlefield

Outside the local primary school, close to Thornhill Community Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Which fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers set the work and price. Nobody heads out before you have had the quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed. Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
