AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Milber: What Now?

All of it hinges on a single detail: whether the engine has been run after the AdBlue went in — more than anything else. Wherever your car stands — Buckland, Milber — never run an engine that has not run yet. Leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103; it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Milber. Already started? Pull over when safe, then turn everything off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Milber forecourt

The cap you opened was the wrong one — and you only spot it while you're standing at the pump, bottle or nozzle in hand. It could be the Sainsbury's, or the Esso, or a different forecourt in Milber.

The point: of every spot to find out, the forecourt is the best. The AdBlue is in that tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.

Your move: keep out of the car, however much the queue wants freeing. Ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle into a parking space, keep your receipt or the bottle, and phone us from the forecourt. Draining it there at the pump is fine when it cannot be moved, since the equipment is explosion-proof.

Milber, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dashboard had been warning you. Only by the recycling, the empty container in hand, did you look back at the cap you'd used at the driveway. It takes place on driveways just off Lime Tree Walk as often as anywhere.

The upshot: no driving since leaves it nearly as good to spotting it at the pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

Next: stop an early drive by keeping the keys indoors, then ring us. Penninn or Milber: whichever your drive is, that is where it gets emptied. Our equipment runs quietly enough that it won't wake the street at night.

Drove off with AdBlue in a diesel around Milber?

Filled up, drove away, and before long the motor was running roughly, smoking, losing power, or lighting up the dash. It might have been driving for Exeter, under 15 miles away, or simply down Addison Road.

What it means: the fuel system has pulled the AdBlue in. The high-pressure pump and every injector get it as well on a longer run, after your filter and pipework have it. Every restart, like every mile, carries it deeper.

What to do: pull over where it's safe to do so and switch off. On the M5, under 15 miles from Milber, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Starting it again to check gets nothing — AdBlue never clears on its own. Roughly how far did it go? Tell us when you call.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

You've just driven this car for days. Your own car either does without AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, and so nothing warned you the AdBlue cap was just beside the diesel. Any driver, anywhere around Devon, might make the same.

Put simply: an extra stage on top of the situations above, and those turn on if it has run. The owner frequently has to sign off any work, under plenty of hire and company agreements.

Sorting it before we arrives is faster, and so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, then us. Keep the car off while the answer comes, even if you're parked outside Newton Abbot or close to St Lukes.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Milber?

Truthfully, the only answer might be that you think so. A slight ammonia smell lingers near your filler, the bottle feels too light, and the cap you took off is a blur. A rushed stop by the gates of Decoy Primary School, or a visit to a friend in Wolborough: both fits.

What it means: a little spilled round the filler does no damage to the engine. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. If there is AdBlue in your tank, turning on the vehicle would draw it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

Your move: behave as if it got in, and don't start your engine. Describe what you noticed on the phone. A clear tank looked at is a better outcome than an already-run one emptied.

What each AdBlue drain around Milber has in common

The work begins the same way, whatever your case. Wherever your vehicle stands — The Keyberry's car park, a street beside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a drive, a filling station — our van gets there and we ask about the fluid, the amount, plus if the engine has turned over. Your price is given over the phone, ahead of anyone setting off, and those replies shape the job.

A thorough flush follows this drain. With petrol it's standard; with AdBlue it's essential, because crystals form and certain metals corrode, and neither washes out unaided. Then is the fuel filter — cleaned, or swapped where necessary — followed by clean diesel, and a test of your vehicle. Most unstarted vehicles are a half-hour job from the moment our engineers arrive.

Starting the car comes at the end. Our check that it runs properly on new diesel comes before we leave. Permanent damage is very rare when it's spotted early, and the entire job is done where the car is. Nothing is taken upfront, payment is made on the day, and you receive what the insurer asks for: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. Check your insurance while we arrive: cover for misfuelling comes built into many policies.
