AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Millend? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm begins once it's pulled through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Millend. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Millend: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a OX7 3 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift the car.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the moment the ignition goes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Mill Close.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Millend forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other. On the drive, the car remains just where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its supply from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Greenend overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through once the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; and, since it attacks some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. A motor left sitting in Millend with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Millend

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using your engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Whether your car sits in Eastend or the heart of Millend, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Oxfordshire the vehicle is standing.

Millend: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it is not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside Chadlington Church of England Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off The Tuer. Else, after dark by The Tite Inn, the vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a company motor, or the other vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use least. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same slip, anywhere around Millend or the remainder of Oxfordshire you happen to be.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Millend?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Chadlington Park, say, or midway across Millend. No starting it again to check: stop when safe, then switch it off. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M40, under 15 miles from Millend, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Millend to park near Knollbury and a drive of under 25 miles towards Oxford are very separate jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Lasting damage is very unusual if it's spotted soon.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Millend: what it takes

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Millend: a side street close to St Nicholas, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job rests on three answers, and we ask for first — which fluid went in, the amount, and if your motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue will not wash away by itself. After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or changed if it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your vehicle. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last. Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Charlbury or on a drive in Millend. It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers leave. Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Millend

There is no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Chadlington Manor House.

For that reason, each enquiry from Millend begins with the same trio — which fluid got in, how much, whether it ran — before a figure. Given those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
