AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Millfield? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till your engine sucks it round. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands around Millfield. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Millfield: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Which fluid, and about what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting SR4 6, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, so it's wasted.
  • Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short way up Robert Street.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

On a forecourt in Millfield, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the pump. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel. The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. A motor filled on a drive in Deptford yesterday evening and not started since is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

After it's drawn in, the damage takes two forms. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Millfield leaves it worse. In the tank alone, waiting does nothing. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Millfield

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the whole issue. Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in your tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so watering it can't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Low Southwick or the heart of Millfield equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only in that tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, wherever the car has stopped in Tyne and Wear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Millfield?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually occurs at home, from a container bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. The top-up gets hurried outside St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Sunderland, because the dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped in. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Milton Street. Else, after dark by The Mountain Daisy, the vehicle is refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical slip, same first response — keep it off — wherever you happen to be in Millfield or the rest of Tyne and Wear.

Millfield: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Pocket Park or halfway across Millfield. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the A194(M), under 10 miles from Millfield, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

A quick hop across Millfield to the car park by City Life Church is one thing; heading for Sunderland, under a mile away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is caught early.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Millfield

Anywhere it has stopped in Millfield — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road beside St Joseph's RC Church — the van travels to the car. Three replies decide the work, so first we ask what got in, about the amount, and whether the engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when that tank is emptied, right there. The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step. Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, by St Peters or on a drive in Millfield. Before we leave, we confirm it is running properly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Millfield: the cost of fixing it

Because each callouts vary, a single price would not be fair. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind St Mary Magdalene's.

Before a quote, not afterwards, each call from Millfield opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
