Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Millfields and Spring Vale carry, with diesel feeding your motor. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use. It's in that gap that the error happens.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Millfields: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Rushbury Close before work, or in the car park at The Greyhond and Punchbowl on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a strange vehicle.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it. Freezeland or the middle of Millfields: it takes the same few seconds in both.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Millfields or a drive over in Ettingshall. Seconds, that's all.

  • Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
  • On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Coseley? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are in West Midlands — a routine to use.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Elford Grove.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located the filler and read the cap.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure the diesel cap remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Millfields already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Shell, Morrisons or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car away if you ask. At home around Millfields? So the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. Leave the M6 — under 5 miles out of Millfields — at the next exit. A short hop across Millfields is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Millfields: what happens when we turn up

Our van comes to the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Beth's Arch, or by Bilston Church of England Primary School. Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask. During the call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. Hence it matters more. A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary. After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
