Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's what many newer diesels around Millway Rise and Sector run, with diesel feeding the engine. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Each tank has one filler of its own. Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, again and again. The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Millway Rise

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Second Avenue, or on the way home in the car park outside The Castle Inn.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started. Weycroft or the heart of Millway Rise: it is the same few seconds either way.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in All Saints or a forecourt in Millway Rise, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Axminster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Devon, use this routine.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Millwey Court.
  • Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located your filler and read it.
  • The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using its own spout.
  • Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there. Step five is off limits.

Millway Rise: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. First: the motor remains unstarted. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Harvest Energy, Tesco or any forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away when you ask. On your own drive around Millway Rise? So the vehicle remains where it is.

When your engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off. Come off the M5 — under 15 miles out of Millway Rise — at the first exit. A short hop across Millway Rise is a smaller job than a run towards Exeter, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

What takes place when we arrive around Millway Rise

The van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Flamingo Swimming Pool, or outside Axminster Community Primary Academy. The replies determine the work and our price, so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run. You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. Hence it counts more. Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. Then our engineers start the car and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
