Milnafua: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation
One thing matters above all once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if your motor has run afterwards. Over in Dalmore or here around Milnafua, an unrun motor should stay unrun. Leave your motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103; it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Milnafua. Already run? Pull over once safe, then turn it off. A larger job, then, but the same first step.
Match what happened to one of the ones below, anywhere around Highland you are.
At the petrol pump in Milnafua: AdBlue in a diesel
The cap you unscrewed was the wrong one — and you just notice it while you're stood at the pump, bottle or nozzle in hand. Be it Morrisons, Invergordon Services or somewhere else in Milnafua, the situation is the same.
What it means: this is the best spot to find out. Still inside your tank, with nothing pulled onwards: that is where the AdBlue sits.
Next: avoid the temptation to fire it up just to move away from the pump. Get the staff to lend a hand rolling it into a space, save the bottle, then ring us right there. The equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a live forecourt, and so a car that cannot be pushed away gets drained right at the pump.
At home around Milnafua with AdBlue in the diesel tank
The warning light had been on for days. Only at the recycling bin, the empty bottle in hand, did you glance back at the cap you'd opened on the drive. It happens on drives just off Davis Drive as frequently as anywhere.
The point: zero driving since leaves this almost equal to finding it at the petrol pump. Diesel and AdBlue stay separate: the AdBlue drops to the base of that tank and remains put, no matter how long the night.
What to do: leave the keys inside the house so nobody moves the car in the morning. Then ring. Your drive is where it gets emptied, be it in Milnafua or Obsdale Park. Night-time clears beside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.
Milnafua: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?
You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Anywhere along Cadboll Wood or heading to Inverness — under 25 miles away.
In short: the AdBlue has been pulled through your fuel system. Distance decides how far it goes: filter and lines first, then the injection pump and each injector. It travels deeper with every extra mile covered and every restart.
Stop safely — that's the next step — then switch everything off. Milnafua lies over 50 miles from the M90; there, come off at the next junction instead of pressing on to the services. It will not have cleared, so there is no point starting it again to find out. Ring us and say how far you travelled.
AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car
A week ago, it was unknown to you. The AdBlue filler sits right alongside the diesel one, which you did not know, since your own motor either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Across Highland, no one is safe from it.
What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. Many rental and company agreements need the owner's sign-off for repairs.
What to do: call the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's faster settled before we arrive than after. Stuck near Rosskeen Free Church or at Alness until someone answers, the car remains turned off the whole time.
Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Milnafua?
Occasionally the fair answer is "I think so". Lighter, that bottle; a trace of ammonia round the filler; a hazy memory of the cap. Look familiar? A hurried top-up by the gates of the local primary school, or a call to a friend in Shillinghill: both fits.
What it means: a little spilled around your filler does no harm to the motor. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, that changes. Firing up the car cannot tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in the tank it will pull it in.
What to do: treat it as if it went in. Do not fire it up. Ring us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.
Milnafua: what each AdBlue drain has in common
Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Anywhere the car is — the pub in the village's car park, a road beside Capstone Centre, a drive, a forecourt — our van arrives and we ask for the fluid, the amount, plus if the motor has turned over. On the phone, before anything else, you hear our price, and those answers shape the work too.
Emptying your tank comes next, then a careful flush — more important with urea than after petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't go by themselves, however long it sits. Next is the filter — flushed, or swapped where necessary — then fresh diesel, and a test of the vehicle. If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.
The last step is firing it up. Our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel before leaving. Our engineers do the whole job where the car is, and permanent damage is very rare if it has been spotted early. Paying comes that day, never upfront. For the insurer, you get a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. Check your insurance before we're en route: cover for misfuelling is included in plenty of policies.
