Milnsbridge: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103. Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully cleaned where your vehicle is around Milnsbridge. Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the engine — but plenty of newer diesels driven about Milnsbridge and Leymoor carry a second fluid too. Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on every tank. Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs. The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Milnsbridge

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

On a driveway off Royal Terrace before work, or in the car park at The Royal heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it. Cowlersley or the heart of Milnsbridge: it is the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Milnsbridge forecourt or a driveway over in Crosland Moor, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Lockwood.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Scar Lane.
  • Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read it.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Don't go on to step five.

Milnsbridge: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. Top of it: your engine stays off. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on. Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Fitzpatrick Fuels, another forecourt nearby or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Milnsbridge.

Already started? Pull over when it's sensible, then switch off. Leave the Outlane Interchange — under 3 miles out of Milnsbridge — at the first junction. A short hop across Milnsbridge is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

Milnsbridge: what occurs when we get there

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Crow Lane Primary and Foundation Stage School, beside Milnsbridge Village Hall or at home, our van comes to it. Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and if it has run — so our technicians ask. You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is drained. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before leaving, our engineers start it and check that it's running correctly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Moving the car is not necessary. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Milnsbridge Bowling Club, a lay-by on the way to Coronation Park, a drive. Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Mark's.
