Milnshaw: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; damage just starts once your pump starts drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Milnshaw, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has been run. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Milnshaw: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So no one can switch your ignition on, take your keys away.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Give us a postcode starting BB5 4, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the motor stays off.
  • Switching your key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Lancaster Avenue.
  • Draining your tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

Rolling the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Milnshaw forecourt you're on, the Asda or any other. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust to clean the gases. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A car topped up on a driveway in Dill Hall overnight and not started since is the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the motor runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is sucked in, the harm takes two forms. It attacks some metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it touches until it's cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. Overnight, a vehicle parked in Milnshaw with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it is just in that tank, it doesn't. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Milnshaw

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the whole fault. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Peel Bank or the middle of Milnshaw.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Lancashire the vehicle has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Milnshaw: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets hurried outside Accrington St Mary Magdalen's Church of England Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped in. Near Warwick Avenue, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening. One more version: dim light, a pub car park outside The Grey Horse Hotel, and someone using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other motor in a family with both fuels. Wherever you're in Milnshaw or the rest of Lancashire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Milnshaw, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

Perhaps coming back from Milnshaw Park, or midway across Milnshaw, your motor may run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M65, under a mile from Milnshaw, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

A quick hop across Milnshaw to the car park by St Mary Magdalen is one thing; driving towards Preston, under 15 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the motor has been started. Noticed early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Milnshaw: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Milnshaw: a side street close to Vue, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run, since those replies settle this work.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than for petrol. After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, then a check of your car. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes last. At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay outside Accrington or a driveway around Milnshaw. Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we go. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Milnshaw: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so not one fixed price is fair. Three things change the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Accrington Arndale Centre.

Before a figure, not after, each call from Milnshaw opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if it ran. When they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Before a van sets off, you hear the price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. While the van is travelling, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
