AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Minster? Keep It Switched Off
Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system draws it in. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Minster. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.
Minster, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once
Do these:
- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
- If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so do not throw it away.
- Call just where you are. Quote a CT12 4 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.
Things not to do:
- Shifting your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.
- Turning the key to ignition alone sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Even a short distance down Tothill Street is too far to drive the vehicle.
- Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.
Rolling your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Minster forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station included. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.
It doesn't combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very place the intake draws from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, and that is why a vehicle filled in Mount Pleasant last night and never started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody touches the key.
It causes two kinds of harm from there. It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it's removed from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels. Overnight, a car sitting in Minster with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it's only inside the tank, nothing changes. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol
A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. No damage is done while it sits unused, mixed into your diesel — only when the engine works on it.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Whether the car is in Hoo or the heart of Minster, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.
As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across Kent the car sits.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Minster
It is not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.
Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Minster Church of England Primary School the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Monkton Road. Otherwise, in dim light outside The New Inn, your car is refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.
The least known vehicles get it most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuels. An identical slip, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are in Minster or the rest of Kent.
Minster: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.
Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Monkton Sports & Play Area, say, or midway across Minster. No starting it again to test: stop once safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of it through.
If you were on the M2, under 25 miles from Minster, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.
How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Minster to the car park by Minster Library & Neighbourhood Centre is a very different job from a run towards Canterbury, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.
Once your engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's noticed quickly.
Minster: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel
We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Minster: a side street near The Salvation Army, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, since those answers decide the work.
Next, draining the tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than for petrol. After that, the filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of the car. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your motor has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.
Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at the nearest station or on a drive around Minster. Before leaving, we check it is running properly with fresh diesel in. We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

Minster: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix
There's no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Minster Village Hall.
Which fluid got in, how much, and if it ran: each Minster enquiry opens with precisely that, ahead of a figure, never afterwards. With those replies, the range narrows to a single fixed number.
You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
