Mobwell: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and the ignition as well. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. In Mobwell, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Mobwell, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Which product, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we can know.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting HP16 9, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Do not do these:

  • Moving your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the motor.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance along Walnut Close.
  • Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

The attendants working at any Mobwell forecourt — the the nearest petrol station included — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. Nothing inside an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup draws from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it sits underneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Hotley Bottom last night and not started remains the straightforward one, provided no one turns the key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it touches until it's cleared from your system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight in Mobwell makes it worse. In the tank only, time does nothing. Then there is the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Harvest Energy's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole issue. Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Prestwood or the middle of Mobwell.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Buckinghamshire the car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Mobwell

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Great Missenden CofE Combined School. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Elmtree Green. Otherwise, after dark outside The Cross Keys, the vehicle is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

Rented cars, brand-new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least known cars see it most. Leave it off: that's the first step to the same slip, anywhere in Mobwell or the rest of Buckinghamshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mobwell, and the motor started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may show up, maybe midway across Mobwell or returning from Buryfield Recreation Ground. No starting it again to check: stop once it is safe, then switch it off. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M40, under 10 miles from Mobwell, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving for St Albans, under 25 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Mobwell to the car park by Great Missenden Memorial Centre. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where the vehicle has stopped, and once the engine has run there is more of it. If it is spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Mobwell: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Mobwell: a side street near Immaculate Heart of Mary, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if your motor has been run, since those replies determine this work.

On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step. Whether it is a parking bay by Great Missenden or a drive in Mobwell, that is where we fire it up and you drive off. Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Mobwell and Buckinghamshire

AdBlue call-outs in Mobwell are passed to vans that cover the places near it — Great Missenden, South Heath plus Little Wood Corner — and most of Buckinghamshire beyond, throughout HP postcodes. Near a boundary, or somewhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

No towing is needed. In Mobwell, a small village, a van that comes to you works: the car is drained where it stands, whether on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Mobwell

There is no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things change the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Great Missenden Community Library.

Ahead of a quote, never afterwards, each enquiry from Mobwell opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and whether it ran. Their answers narrow the range down to a single figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance. While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
