Moneyhill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Moneyhill. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels in Maple Cross, as well as Moneyhill, run on two fluids; your engine gets just your diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

There's a filler for each tank. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap to use. It's in that gap that the error happens.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Moneyhill?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Field Way, or heading home in the car park outside The Halfway House.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Moneyhill or out in Mill End.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Moneyhill or a driveway over in Heronsgate. A few seconds, that's all.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • The previous driver knows. Ask as you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Rickmansworth's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hertfordshire that is.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Dellwood, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.
  • Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through its own spout.
  • Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Leave out step five altogether.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Moneyhill already?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins. Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it alone starts your fuel pump. Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or somewhere else. Your own driveway in Moneyhill is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. On the M25, under a mile from Moneyhill, that means the next junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Moneyhill.

Our arrival around Moneyhill, and what takes place next

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it by St Peter's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, near Mill End Baptist Church or on your own drive, our van travels to it. Both the work and the price rest on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask. On the call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of your vehicle. Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
