AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Monmore Green? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Being water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; damage only comes once your pump starts pulling it. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Monmore Green. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Monmore Green: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting WV2 2, or whatever street is closest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Never:

  • Moving the vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Purbrook Road.
  • Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

At a forecourt around Monmore Green, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the pump. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it treats the gas. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Moseley Village last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, working on any part it touches until it's cleared from the system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Monmore Green. Just in your tank, it stays stable. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole problem. Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Whether your vehicle is in Freezeland or the centre of Monmore Green, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Midlands the car is standing.

Monmore Green: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Holy Rosary Catholic Primary Academy. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Parkside Industrial Estate. Another version: darkness, the car park outside Red Lion, and someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new motor, a company motor, or the spare car in a family with one of each fuels — the vehicles people know least. Wherever you're around Monmore Green or the rest of West Midlands, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Monmore Green, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Via the filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any may appear, perhaps part way across Monmore Green or coming back from Black Country Millennium Forest. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M6, under 5 miles from Monmore Green, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Monmore Green to the car park by Mount Siloh Apostalic Church is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has stopped, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted quickly.

Monmore Green: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around Monmore Green — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road beside Baitul Atta Mosque — the van travels to your vehicle. Three replies shape the work, and so before anything else we ask which fluid got in, about the amount, and whether your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is emptied, right there. A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't wash away by itself. Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your car. Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with new diesel comes last. Whether it is a parking bay outside Wolverhampton or a driveway in Monmore Green, that is where we start it and you set off. Before we leave, we make sure it is running properly with new diesel in. No workshop is needed at any point, with the entire job done then and there. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Monmore Green: the cost of fixing it

Because the callouts differ, a single price would not be fair. What changes the price is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind St Matthew.

What got in, how much, and if it ran: each Monmore Green enquiry begins with precisely that, ahead of any quote, not after. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
