Moor Side: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Moor Side. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen about Moor Side and Farnley Bank carry a second liquid too. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in that gap that the slip happens.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Moor Side

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off Woodside Lodge before work, or in the car park at Golden Cock heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Whether it happens in Netherton or the middle of Moor Side, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Moor Side

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Moor Side or a drive out in Thunder Bridge. A few seconds, no more.

  • Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Stocksmoor? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Farnley Road.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Do not go on to step five.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Moor Side?

Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Gulf, Texaco or another forecourt will usually help to push the car away when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Moor Side.

When your motor has run by now, stop safely and switch the car off. The next exit means where to leave if you are on the M62, under 10 miles from Moor Side. About how far did it go? Hopping across Moor Side is smaller work than a run of under 15 miles to Wakefield, so say.

Our arrival around Moor Side, and what occurs next

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it by Farnley Tyas Church of England Voluntary Controlled First School, near St Lucius or at home, the van comes to it. Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those replies set both work and quote. During the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle. Before leaving, we start it and confirm that it is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
