AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Moorclose: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your car sits in Moorclose, is usually all it needs when found before the motor runs. The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Moorclose and Workington carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own. Many of cars have a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, again and again. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. The error lives in that gap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Moorclose: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Crosthwaite Court, or outside The Travellers Rest on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on. Whether it occurs in Westfield or the middle of Moorclose, it is the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Moorclose

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Moorclose forecourt or a driveway over in High Harrington, take a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.
  • On many cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • Cannot find it next to the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.
  • The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Workington, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Cumbria that is.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Laybourn Court, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Finish once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using the own spout.
  • Shut the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel cap remained shut the whole time. After that, start the car.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop. Never go on to step five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Moorclose already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine. Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Morrisons or any other — the staff will usually help push the car away, if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Moorclose.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run. On the Southwaite Services Northbound, under 50 miles from Moorclose, that means the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Moorclose.

When we turn up around Moorclose, what takes place?

By St Gregory's Catholic Primary School, Workington, close to St Gregory's or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Those replies decide this work and the quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run. On the phone call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of that washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Next our engineers start it and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
